I at Indian Institute Of Science

'  Can you design Chebyshev Filter ' The interviewer asked.
' Sir, When was in college I used to take more than one hour to design the one in MATLAB. It requires  a lot of calculations for the exact values of the variables. I can explain you the way I calculate the values to design the Chebyshev. Will this be fine? Exact calculation will take another 45 minutes and the our interview  is already running for past 45 minutes. ' I requested.
' You can take 45 minutes of time' The interviewer responded.

I was confronting the interview panel of ECE  in renowned institute of the nation - Indian Institute of Science. Though I had no intention to pursue Master of Technology , I had opted to visit this lushly green campus of IISc for two reasons . First, I was in already Bangalore , so I hadn't to give extra damn to go there. Second, I wanted to learn from the such a interview as not many people of the nation get this opportunity .

I took a leave in the office and approached Majestic Bus Stand at 1:00 PM . Confronting all congestion, I was in IISc at 2:00 PM . I was wondering whether this institute's value is undermined or overpriced because of the reason the common people call this institute as ' Tata Institute' ( as it was established by honorable JRD Tata) rather than actual name 'IISc'

The campus was damn silent and surprisingly clean (compared to any Govt institute) . I was offered some refreshment when I fulfilled all formalities of attendance verification in the department of Electronics and Communication . It just reminded me that a scapegoat is also offered the similar treatment before butchering . I smiled uncomfortably.

There were 13 candidates present for the interview and expected duration for each one's interview was 40 minutes. I was not surprised when I was the last to be called and everyone else had left. I turned up at 7:00 PM .
I was not nervous because I was pretty sure that I had nothing to do with the out come of the interview, but I was feeling uncomfortable because I was alone and the campus was damn silent .
After formal salutations and a short discussion on my GATE score, my job and my previous alma , the panel ( included 4 people - one young person, two near 50s and one heading to retirement) told me to go to the whiteboard. They asked me to pick any  2 subjects in mathematics .
Since I loved  Signals in my graduation - I opted ' transforms' and ' algebra' .
Doing good in mathematics boosted my confidence ( though some questions were indeed tricky and practical). They asked me a few  questions regarding communications and I was comfortable answering them . Surprisingly, they didn't give damn for digital and analog electronics . Perhaps , this was very much expected from a student of ECE and they wanted a swerve.

' Sumit, Do you know Digital Signal Processing' the oldest person asked.
I nodded for Yes.
After  answering some qns on IIR and FIR , I was hoping that now the interview should be over. I was feeling hungry and the clock was reading 7:45 PM.
And, then I was told to take 45 minutes to design one digital filter .

I took some time and then decided to respond ' Sorry' . I was not willing to continue with the interview.

DAY 2

As I was aware of the route to IISc, I took a detour to reach there. I reached the department of Nanotechnology . Unlike the department of ECE, it was lying in outside the older campus and was very much 'different' from ECE department - Not much greenery and ongoing constructions. This department was newly opened at IISc ( perhaps It was just 2-yr old course at IISc)

'Why do you want to pursue Nanotech? ' I was asked.
' because this is new technology and is too good for an electronics student'  I replied.
' But this is basically for metallurgy students ' - I was contradicted by the interviewer . He had  agood blend of whiteness in his hair.
I was surprised.
' How can Nanotech be for Metallurgy people? Nano implies 10 raised to power -9  such a small dimension stuffs come under electronics only . Also, in ICs , the conductors are mainly polysilicon. Metals are used only at outer terminal , so there is no point Nanotech can come under metallurgy course. ' I tried to explain.

I was astonished hitherto.

'Ok Ok, Now that you have come let's begin the process'  the second interviewer understood me it seemed.
'Thanks'
' Sumit, Can you draw VI Characteristics for a diode?
' Which diode sir? - Pn junction diode, Zener diode,  Avalanch diode, Gunn diode..... " I asked.
' Draw anyone? you ask too many questions'  They laughed.
' Actually I was expecting this specification from most reputed institute of this nation. The characteristics will be different for each of them ' I was still not believing that I was interviewing at IISc'
I drew VI characteristics for Silicon PN junction diode and explained.

' What will happen to band gap if temperature is raised ? '
' Theoretically it will decrease my a factor of beta , but there is no experimental evidence of this " I answered while writing the related formula. I was pretty sure of my answer.
To my surprise, the interviewer was not agree with my answer and we discussed less and argued more on this particular question.

One -two more formal questions and I was told to go . The results were supposed to declare in a week on the institute' s website.

Disclaimer : I am not intended to denigrate this premier institution's value . All I want to figure out that where is our education heading to.
